A Guide: How to Select a Digital Signage Display Screen for Your Customers

Choosing the right digital signage display screen for your commercial customers can be challenging due to the many options and the technology behind them changing rapidly. This guide will walk you through the different types of display screens and their features, enabling you to choose the right one for your customers.

Display Applications

Digital signage has revolutionised communication across a broad spectrum of industries. Interactive displays, with their ability to foster seamless content sharing and real-time teamwork, have become indispensable in modern workplaces, educational institutions, and even creative studios. Digital signage displays have also transformed marketing strategies, enabling businesses to disseminate dynamic content effectively in retail stores, airport terminals, corporate lobbies, museums, and sports arenas. A particularly striking example of digital signage's transformative power is the emergence of video walls. These large-scale digital displays, composed of multiple individual screens arranged in a grid, provide an immersive and captivating visual experience. Video walls are increasingly used in various settings, including transportation hubs, entertainment and hospitality venues, and healthcare facilities.

What screen size does your customer need?

Selecting the ideal digital signage screen size involves critical considerations. Location and environment dictate whether larger screens thrive in open spaces or smaller ones are suitable for confined areas. Audience viewing distance is pivotal, with larger screens enhancing visibility at greater distances. Content complexity impacts readability and guides the choice. Budget, installation constraints, aesthetics, content legibility, and technical specifications all influence the decision. A comprehensive assessment ensures the selected screen size aligns perfectly with your digital signage objectives, optimizing impact and engagement.

Display Resolution

Screen resolution plays a crucial role in digital signage as it directly impacts the quality and clarity of displayed content. Higher resolution screens can render images, text, and videos with greater detail and sharpness, enhancing the overall visual experience. This is particularly important when displaying intricate graphics, fine text, or high-definition video content, as lower-resolution screens may result in pixelation and reduced legibility. Additionally, higher resolution screens allow for larger displays without sacrificing image quality, making them essential for creating impactful and visually appealing digital signage installations.

Backlit Technology

Backlit technology in monitors plays a pivotal role in enhancing display quality. There are primarily two types: Direct LED and Edge LED.

Direct LED, also known as LED (Light Emitting Diode), involves placing an array of LEDs directly behind the screen. This configuration allows for precise local dimming, resulting in superior contrast and black levels.

On the other hand, Edge LED positions LEDs along the edges of the screen. While it's more energy-efficient and enables slimmer designs, it may have limitations in uniformity and contrast compared to Direct LED.

WLED (White LED) is a common backlighting source, utilising blue LEDs with a phosphor coating to produce white light. It offers efficiency and longevity, contributing to the vibrant visuals we expect from modern monitors.

Display Mounting Options

A VESA mount is a standardised interface that allows displays to be attached to various compatible mounts, offering flexibility in positioning. In contrast, a wall mount is a specific method of affixing a display directly to a wall, providing a fixed and permanent installation. In commercial applications, a VESA mount facilitates versatile display placement, for example in shopping malls where digital signage screens can be affixed to portable kiosks, allowing for easy reconfiguration and content updates. Conversely, a wall mount serves as a stable, permanent solution, such as mounting flight departure boards securely in airports, providing a fixed and sleek display for passengers. Floor-standing digital display units are a versatile and effective way to communicate with customers and visitors in a variety of commercial settings. These displays can be used to display a wide range of content, including product information, promotional messages, wayfinding directions, and more.

Mount Orientation

Digital signage display orientation, whether portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal), impacts content delivery. Portrait orientation is suited for tall, narrow displays, ideal for showcasing restaurant menus or wayfinding in narrow hallways. Landscape orientation, wider and shorter, is better for video ads in retail stores or informational displays in corporate lobbies. Choosing the right orientation enhances viewer engagement.

Indoor / Outdoor

Indoor and outdoor digital display units are versatile and effective tools for communicating with customers, visitors, and employees in a variety of commercial and public settings. These displays can be used to display a wide range of content, including product information, promotional messages, wayfinding directions, news and weather updates, and more.

Indoor digital displays are typically used in retail stores, restaurants, hotels, airports, hospitals, schools, and other indoor spaces. Outdoor digital displays are typically used in stadiums, arenas, bus stops, billboards, and other outdoor spaces.

Both indoor and outdoor digital displays offer a number of advantages over traditional static signage. They are more visually appealing and attention-grabbing, they can be easily updated, and they can be used to collect data about customer engagement.
